![]() ![]() You’re encouraged to explore, not only to gain the experience you’ll routinely forfeit at the end of each crawl and stack levels so you’re full of well-fed stats, but to fill out your arsenal. A hurried mage needs only to locate the key that unlocks the boss’ chambers, but a hurried mage is often a dead mage. To begin with, these are simple enough structures, only containing one floor with a single boss fight housed somewhere in their depths. The only way out is either miserable death or glorious victory. You’re dropped into a stage with nothing but your starting weapon (it’s a wand – the magical equivalent of a basic pistol) and left to sink or swim. That’s your excuse for taking on a bunch of randomly generated dungeons over and over again. The only people left to try and piece things back together again are a couple of novices. That’s not an option anymore the Ziggurat exploded and the mage sects are scattered. Because it was just sitting there, it was decided that the best thing to do was throw aspiring mages in and label the shell-shocked survivors as successful graduates. Turns out, back then, the Ziggurat was a kind of magical prison that immortal demons were dumped into. This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise for those with experience from the first game, but that demographic doesn’t include me. You get a whole lot of different wizardy weapons spread across the entire game, because Ziggurat 2 is also a Roguelike. Rather than deck you out with pump action shotguns, rocket launchers and plasma rifles, you get magical staves, ancient tomes and dwarven blunderbusses. ![]() It’s a classic mindset that’s been much more commonplace ever since Doom started its comeback tour in 2016, so Ziggurat 2 goes a little bit further to distinguish itself. You don’t regain health by sitting quietly in a corner for a while, you have to actively hunt down health-up drops from defeated enemies. Ziggurat 2 subscribes to the core fundamentals of classic shooters never stop moving if you want to stay alive. I didn’t adjust quickly enough to survive this, and I was dead seconds later. There was no time to slowly chip away at them they are upon you in seconds. When I first strolled into a room and was told I had to defeat the incoming enemy waves, I hunkered down behind some scenery and got ready to exchange some fire. My twitch skills are fine modern shooters are to blame. This, of course, couldn’t have been my fault, so I quickly settled on a scapegoat. My offence broke down, and then there was orange, and then there was death. There was a horde of the furious bastards, and it became clear early on that my desperate backpedalling wasn’t going to get me clear of them. My first violent death in Ziggurat 2 came from the gnashing jaws of angry sentient carrots. After killing our enemies, experience crystals fall out of them and if we collect the necessary amount of them, our character will level up, increasing the pool of her maximum points of life and mana, and unlocking access to a new skills."Magically destroyed so many creatures that they call me Da mage" Enemies include powerful guards, goblins, knights and dangerous carrots. The skirmishes are dynamic and require accuracy, but also the ability to avoid enemy attacks, whose behaviour and type of damage vary. We get rid of enemies with spells and ranged weapons such as wands, boltguns, magic books throwing poisonous bullets or fireballs, grenades and bombs, scepters with different trajectories of bullets inflicting damage from the elements and others. While exploring each room, we come across hordes of enemies, but also traps and special treasures. The core of the game is no different from what was presented to us in the previous installment. Ziggurat 2 is a roguelite in the form of a first-person shooter, where each level is generated randomly. To do this, we walk through the Ziggurat, a multi-level sacred tower typical of Mesopotamian architecture, getting rid of the evil that lies there in the form of a wide variety of monsters. In the game we play the role of one of the members of the most powerful magical order, whose task is to protect humanity from the evil forces. Milkstone Studios is again responsible for the development and release of the game, known for games such as Farm Together and White Noise. Ziggurat 2 is the second instalment of a dynamic first-person rogue-like shooter in which, killing hundreds of enemies, we use an arsenal of ranged weapons and spells as we walk through the vast Citadel. ![]()
